Here is my 2 cents:
1) If down the road you have an itch for more power, on 535i $1500 buys you 50HP easy. Try that with 550i, the last super charge kit from Dinan for 545, cost 8K (mind you installation is extra).
2) for 4K on aero kit I go with Hamann, more exclusive than the factory. Given the factory installed may have better color matching. though if the aero kit for MY08 is around $2600, like that of the MY 07, I'll go for it in a heart beat.
3)The notion, turbo will kill an engine sooner probably over generalisation, I have Audi A4 with bigger turbo put in 5 years ago and after 45000 miles no engine problem at all. It just hit 105000 miles last week. If BMW is less reliable than Audi, god help us all  . I expect my 535i to last at least that long and more.
4) 535i is 250lb ligther!, Oh that $1500 upgrade will not add weight, it's all software
Apart from voiding the factory warranty, dosen't the vishnu chip decrease reliability?

So, here is my dilemna. I got one of the early production e60 M5's--big mistake, nothing but problems. I am currently trying to work through my dealer on a buy-back and if BMWNA is not fair (this is my 11th BMW), then it may be my last. In either event, I am contemplating replacements. I have determined I do not want another M5 or M6 as I am still shell-shocked. I am also contemplating a MB e63, but I do not get the same enjoyment from the MB as I do from the BMW. I am considering the 550 with the sport package and M aerodynamic trim (at least it looks like an M5), but am intrigued by the 535. The thing that bothers me about the 535 is that, as I understand it, you can not get the M trim on the 535 in the US. If I am mistaken, someone please correct me. A 535 equipped like I want is approximately 7,000 less than a comparably equipped 550. My dealership only has a 550, but no 535's. Has anyone driven both and, if so, do the driving dyamics and performance differ significantly between the two vehicles? Thank you in advance.

In my opinion, this is a very individual decision.

Both cars are outstanding in their own ways.

I'll also add that you'll benefit by evaluating a 535i's performance after it's initial break-in.

BMW has actually a problem to deliver all N54 (3.0 litre TT) engines needed.

Therefore the 535i is not available in Europe and some other sales restrictions are made.

With regards to waranty,no question about it. It's the risk anybody modding new car will have to live with.

I am not going to say with 100% certainty that it won't affect reliability.
But my A4 stock boost was 7PSI, with KO4 turbo kit I am pushing 14 PSI. And after 45000miles/5 years later it's still running smoothly.

My gut feeling telling me, this is the same situation when I bought my A4 1.8T 150HP stock in 97, the talked back then even before the car hit US shore was mod, and people pass on the bigger V6 220HP A4.

BTW, the Audi 1.8T won the WARD best engine in 97 just like BMW 335i in 2007, coincidence

It's like buying a stock that has a PE of 5 and has annual growth sales of 25% , it's all in the "potential"

when you tune a car and "reprogramme the ECU" you call it "chip" you can do it with 0 km car, but it is indeed better if the car did some kms (miles) before, braking in is very essential in the long run and in the life of the engine.

Matter of fact if O.E. warranty would be over but never heared of it yet, big tuners take over your warranty.

They can see if it is modified but to read out they need only to look into that and for 6-7 hrs, of course they will never tell you this...

Let's say I have a friend and he was in for service and they could not at all read his/her ecu...

But for petrol it will in any case or engine be max. 17-20 hp, which is normal for a diesel its significantly more.

Others also set their ECU back to normal when service is due, and then put the other programme back.

I don't see money as being an issue in your statement, why not another e60 m5? Surely, the bugs have been worked out. Afterall, HP was a big part in getting the m5, right? To go to a 550i or 535i will be a mistake in the long road because the car is the same with less performance. An e63 is probably a better choice if you don't like the m5 anymore. Don't downgrade just because it was a buggy m5 that you had.

This is quite a heated discussion on Bimmerfest and actually a decision that many of us have to make. I have no desire to mod a leased car. Lets assume that they both perform the same. (which they don't). I have driven them both and whereas that stats may have them close, the real feel of the two cars is different. As one poster mentioned, the 535 has to work harder. The demand for the 535 is high right now and when you lease, the difference between like optioned cars is minimal. my dilema became an easy decision. The following factors weighed in order of priority.
  1. 6psd NA until 09/08 production on 535
  2. Short Shifter
  3. NO Runflats
  4. M Kit
  5. No difference in price

I am not leasing, and when you consider the purchase price the difference betwen like equipped cars is $7-8000 dollars. I have had an opportunity to drive a 535i with ZSP only once, and that was for a short 10 - 15 minutes (weekday with too much traffic), too short a period to really get the feel of the car. The dealers here have amazingly only had one 535i with Sport Package, and the one I briefly drove sold before I had a chance to schedule a weekend drive.

The feel of the two cars is different, but I have yet to determine if that difference is worth the extra bucks to me given my typical use of the car (to and from work in stop-and-go traffic with only occasional highway driving). The 535i makes more sense from a practical point of view (lower gas mileage, lower cost, and from what the current lease residuals look like, better resale value), but buying a BMW is rarely a "practical" decision. And that's is a good thing because that's why we drive them!

Interesting thread.

I bought a 545i in 2004 ( hence my very early join date) for my wife. The car was great and she loved it, till it got hit driving to LA
last month. 22K in repairs and I promptly traded it in for her last night.

She could have any car she wants ( she did not want a M5 because of SMG/6MT) the 550 and 335i were compared over several hours and
she ended up with a fully loaded ( I mean everything, HUD,NAV,Vent seats) and she loves it. This was our 8th BMW from this dealer in 5 years
and they gave us a great deal across the board.

I dropped off the keys today and all they wanted to talk about was my 2007 Audi RS4

Good luck.
