So, here is my dilemna. I got one of the early production e60 M5's--big mistake, nothing but problems. I am currently trying to work through my dealer on a buy-back and if BMWNA is not fair (this is my 11th BMW), then it may be my last. In either event, I am contemplating replacements. I have determined I do not want another M5 or M6 as I am still shell-shocked. I am also contemplating a MB e63, but I do not get the same enjoyment from the MB as I do from the BMW. I am considering the 550 with the sport package and M aerodynamic trim (at least it looks like an M5), but am intrigued by the 535. The thing that bothers me about the 535 is that, as I understand it, you can not get the M trim on the 535 in the US. If I am mistaken, someone please correct me. A 535 equipped like I want is approximately 7,000 less than a comparably equipped 550. My dealership only has a 550, but no 535's. Has anyone driven both and, if so, do the driving dyamics and performance differ significantly between the two vehicles? Thank you in advance.

My Ride: 2008 BMW 535i with just about every option- Space Gray/Black/Bamboo Wood/OEM M6 Wheels
![Default](https://5series.net/forums/images/icons/icon1.gif)
.2 second difference in 0-60 as stated by bmw, may be less though.
The 535 is rated at 300HP, but its putting out more than that.
Everyone will have their opinion, but the best car for the money is the 535i. (power vs. cost)
My 535 went into production this past monday I should have it 1st week of July, my plans were the M Aero Kit, and M6 wheels, for now I cant get the Aero Kit, but I will still get the wheels, and when the Aero Kit becomes available...I will add it.

I was debating about that over the weekend and drove both models at the dealer/
Here's my two-cents...
The 535's engine seems more responsive than the 550. However, being a turbo, you got to consider the heat factor over the long run.
Even though the 535 has 300 hp, it was at a higher rpm before you get the same "power" as the V8.
Now, the 550 just felt more "solid" and quieter to me.
Both car performed well around turns and accelerated accordingly except the 550 was able to achieve this at lower RPMs.
Hence, quieter ride, even with the sport package and 19" running.
I saw the M-body kit being an accessory in the catalog. Perhaps you can add it later. (so the body kit argument is out)
but then again, "there's no replacement for displacement..."
With that, I'm driving around in a carbon black 550 now.
I'm sure either choice would be excellent, but do drive them both before deciding.
Your call. Good luck.

I have driven the e63 and I have the 550i LCi sport. Frankly, I would get the e63 if I could afford it.

Bang for the buck, there's no question that the 535 is the better choice. But the price difference will greatly diminish once the aero package is available and you add it ($2.5 - $3K installed.). The price difference is further diminished when you consider the 19-inch wheels (vs 18s on the 535) and the upgraded sport suspension and exhaust note on the 550 (both are better than the 535, but not as good as the M5).
If you're looking for a manual, the biggest difference may be the short-throw 6MT on the 550 Sport. I think it's better than both the 535's and the M's (which was jury-rigged from the E39 and never properly developed for the E60).
You've got to decide whether those things, plus the V8, are worth the 550's extra bucks. My choice is evident from my sig.

Here is my 2 cents:
1) If down the road you have an itch for more power, on 535i $1500 buys you 50HP easy. Try that with 550i, the last super charge kit from Dinan for 545, cost 8K (mind you installation is extra).
2) for 4K on aero kit I go with Hamann, more exclusive than the factory. Given the factory installed may have better color matching. though if the aero kit for MY08 is around $2600, like that of the MY 07, I'll go for it in a heart beat.
3)The notion, turbo will kill an engine sooner probably over generalisation, I have Audi A4 with bigger turbo put in 5 years ago and after 45000 miles no engine problem at all. It just hit 105000 miles last week. If BMW is less reliable than Audi, god help us all  . I expect my 535i to last at least that long and more.
4) 535i is 250lb ligther!, Oh that $1500 upgrade will not add weight, it's all software
