Rudy,
i am already drooling here...getting my SAT 550i soon(hopefully 1st week of Oct), i enjoyed my 3 yrs of SMG but there were not exactly smoothest years of my driving life...you know what i mean,i was getting tired of occasional mismatch of gearing, esp on 1-2 and 2-1(i drive a lot in the city). I think SAT will be my type of trans for life...that is until DSG comes out!

I cant imagine why anyone would get SMG on a 550 when you can have SAT (Sport Automatic Transmission). The SAT provides the civility and silky smoooth transmission you want/need in certain situations BUT when you tap the gear shifter to the left and push the SPORT button..the car is a completely different animal. The paddle shifters work lighting quick and this car does not have a clutch. I prefer the SAT to SMG any day of the week. You need to drive a 550 with SAT. Its a Must!
thats exactly what i did, sold my 07 550i smg after 6 month and 1500 miles. Just never appreciated for what it is. In my opinion, its too "jerky" for most people, not saying that its a bad tranny. Its definitely not for everyone. Now driving a 08 550i with SAT with 600 miles. Loving it more and more.

After many years of owning my E60 with SMG transmission, I'm still loving it despite my fair share of SMG malfunctions which all are fixed throughout these years lol. Replaced SMG module, SMG pump, clutch, flywheel, clutch actuator, SMG sensors, etc... Lol. Especially in sport mode its shifting is
a lot more responsive but of course not as responsive as the M's SMG and the new DCT. Anywho, yes my E60 with SMG transmission is still alive and very much enoy driving it from time to time.

There's nothing better than a full on Manual transmission. It gives you more feel of the car when driving. The SMG trannys that i've seen had issues (mostly all being e46 m3's). My friends hated those SMG trannys and cost them way too much to keep fixing. They ended up selling their cars eventually... However it is your decision on what will be best for you. Best of luck.
