To O/P, this issue is very easy to check:
1) Plan on longest freeway trip you can think of maybe 2 hour straight, morning weekend hour for less traffic
2) check tires pressure
3) fill up the gas (premium grade).
4) reset trip computer and odometer
At destination:
1) fill up the gas and see how much was consumed
2) check tire pressure to make sure no small leaks
3) check trip compuer, average speed and odometer
If tyou are getting what advertise on EPA claim by BMW, nothing to worry about.
Everybody has different driving style during short commute. Though total average of 25-26mpg on V8 is rubbish. My 535i (with trip computer never reset, so it indicate total average) @3000 miles now indicate 20.3mpg.

I usually get around 10-11mpg with mixed suburb/city driving. I got 18mpg a couple of times after a combo of suburb and one hour freeway driving. Never got anything over 18mpg. I am also a lead foot....

I haven't done enough freeway driving to know. I'm usually on the freeway for less than 5 miles. A couple of times I've driven 50 miles on the freeway at a time and it raised the MPG avg from 10 to 14.5... but that's an average and it had been a few weeks since I reset the computer.
It sounds like I should just be patient and it will get better over time.

I still think your numbers are lower than they should be even at 1200 miles. I'd give it until about 1500 miles and if you're still where you are mileage wise then I would talk to your SA.
A related question... does the car transmission adapt to my driving style over time? If so, maybe that's another reason it's getting a little bit better.

I did notice an improvement in the last 600 miles. I was getting 10 MPG and now I'm getting 11.3 MPG avg (driving the same roads). Either the car changed or my foot got lighter, most likely... both.

I'm just hitting 1200 miles on my 550i automatic and the MPG is still much lower than I expected it to be. The past 2 weeks I've tried driving it more conservatively, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. I'm getting an average of 11 MPG!!! It goes down to 10 MPG if I put it in DS mode. I expected it to be closer to 15. My driving is 95% city driving with an average speed of 15.5 MPH.
I've searched this forum and have found a few threads about MPGs, but nothing specific to the 550i.
I'd like to hear from some other 550i owners out there. Would be great to hear from some in Los Angeles driving the same kind of roads.
- What avg MPGs are you seeing?
- % city / % highway
- How many miles on your car?

This is the type of mileage I've been getting since I got the car 18 months ago. I'm getting 18 MPG on my M3! What's that all about?!?

Well I think that it is pretty clear that depending on how you drive the car you can expect between 11 to 25 MPG with average around 17-18 with a good mix of highway/city. These numbers claiming high 20's lower 30's are just not real. On a 545 or a 550 18 is pretty good. Just be glad you don't have a M5 or an X5

If your in the USA just go into idrive settings and change from us gallons to uk gallons, then you'll have a nice jump in mpg
Seriously though, I've driven a few BMWs now that had MPG set to US instead of UK and were reporting lower than actual figures, so for anyone getting really good figures in the USA you might be set on uk MPG by mistake?
