Get the M5. The 550 is a lovely car with tons of highway passing power but the M5 is in a different performance league altogether. For example, at a recent meet, my 550 was up against king1828's M5 from a light up to about 100 mph. From 0 to about 30 or 40, his car was ahead but not by much. Above 30-40 mph, his M5 pulled away from my 550 like my car was standing still and, of course, I was at WOT.

thats a good thought but i definitely think a lot of people like that extra boost in lower gears. i have a 550 and my dad has an e63 (basically same performance as m5)
and the e63 is way more fun to stomp on at the light. passing on the freeway at higher speeds they feel fairly similar though...

Get the M5 do it once in your life. Just to know the pinnacle feeling of these cars and you'll realize it's insane and too much for these roads and that you would be satisfied with a 550 but that's only after you had the M5. I never drove and M but I do own and AMG that is compared or slightly better than the M and I feel I don't get to use the car to it's full potential. Our city has a zero tolerance law where if u get caught doing 150 km/h your car will be taken away for 30days(car jail) and suspended license.

I can't comment on the maintenance costs of either of the vehicles, but if the thought of an M5 is in your head now, it will not go away when you get a 550. Trust me.

Thanks for the reply. I have my 550i for 1.5 yrs now and very happy but everytime you see an M5...you always think.
Indeed.. I have a 545 for my DD, but once I sell my convertible toy (hopefully next season) I plan to pick up a 2006 or 7 M5 for my new "toy" car. The 545 is nice, plenty of power for around town, but I want to know the pleasure of owning an M, just one time.. LOL
