OP, get the sprintbooster.. i too have the 550 and it DOES have that lag you speak of. Incredibly annoying for this type of car, but in order to get rid of it you should just get the sprintbooster. After that its almost non-exsistent.

I thought the sprintbooster only amplifies the signal it gets from the throttle.... not really decrease the time

OP, I too have a MT 550i, I had the CDV (Clutch Delay Valve) tapped open. That seemed to have helped with the acceleration issue. It most certainly has made the MT much more enjoyable to drive. The "Sprint Booster" type device is my next mod. Hopefully this delay in acceleration will disappear - it seems by all who have installed this device to have eliminated the delay.

As I was explained by a reputable shop owner, who specializes in modding BMW and M-B:
Without SB your default signal (signal before you press it at all) from the gas pedal is 0.
With the SB the default signal will be greater than 0, thereby decreasing the amount of time it takes the car to react. (In terms of percentage, this is an increase of "infinite proportions" btw )
The difference is minuscule in terms of any possible damage from this, nor is it really noticeable, but when it comes to moving the car off the line - its day and night vs. stock.

I remember reading that also opening CDV will cure any possible "kick-backs" from the clutch, when you're engaging it quickly

i can see how my initial message could have been misinterpreted.

I am clear that neither my 550 nor my prior 540 have turbos. I was using this to illustrate the feel of the rush of power I have in 550 that is not immediate. There is a slight pause before the torque kicks in. It feels a bit like my old TT audi s4.

The E39 540I Sport in 2003 at least had a final drive ratio for all out acceleration -- fuel economy be damned.

This was the explanation I was looking for! I knew I had seen something about this in the past.

Thanks for the insight - and to all who responded.

I had gotten pretty used to this, and I was reasonably determined to keep my car as stock as possible. However I am leaning a bit toward the sprint booster now if it can eliminate the delay.

I have to agree with Gene...(I noticed he posted THIS time!) try the 25 second transmission reset trick, it will give you an IMMEDIATE improvement and will keep your car in the stock configuration too! BTW, I would DEFINITELY get the Sprint Booster as it makes a big difference in response, along with being completely reversible too!

I say, "Just say NO to the Sprint Booster!" It only affects the feel of the pedal and has absolutely NO affect on throttle response, decreased lag, etc. Just push the pedal a little harder and you get the same results as the SB. I understand the need of those who have it to keep drinking the koolaide and saying it really makes a difference blah blah blah, but really, think about what its doing. And there are some very respected and long time members who have it and swear by it - I still respect them and there opinions, just not on this one.

Don't believe it, read this http://peony888.com/VS/SprintBooster.pdf

Just my two cents on this OVERLY EXPENSIVE damn near useless mod. Then you have to worry with taking it off when the car goes in for service, putting it back on, etc etc.

Save your money for another mod that doesn't do anything, but at least looks cool, like a roof spoiler or something.
