Who said anything about 400HP??

The numbers I've seen suggest 375 to 385HP. remenber that this is a Valvetronic engine. Not the 5.0 Litre S62 engine (aka BMW M-Power) that was in the M5 and Z8.

Then there's a rumor the 545i will be untouched and retain its' current engine because of the new M5, and the 7er and X5 will get the new V8.

In case some of you didn't notice, Mercedes has just returned to using 4 Valves per cylinder on their newest engine. The word on the street is that by next year, they will have a new V8 with something in the neighborhood of 375 or 385 hp as well.

Although many would say that BMW is not overly concerned with what MB is doing, I wouldn't be surprised to see BMW's new V8 engine with close to that amount of horsepower surfacing in the E60 by Spring of 2006.

The x5 just got a new v8 in the form of 4.8 liters. I guess more power is welcome, but 100K for a X5?

If the new v8 replaces the engine in the 745, wouldn't that take more sales away from the 760 which I hear is not doing so well.

Let's look at the relative engine sizes, outputs for the outgoing BMW models:

M3 333 hp
540i 290 hp
M5 394 hp

So the M3 has about 15% more hp than the 540, and 18% less than the M5
and 540 has 36% less than the M5.

Now, let's look at the replacement models:

M3 400 hp
545 325 hp
M5 500 hp

Here, the M3 has 23% more hp than the 545, and 20% less than the M5
and the 545 has 54% less than the M5.

It looks like the M3 and M5 relationship is about where it normally is, but the 545 is a bit low. I would guess they could offer a 'detuned' version of the V8 for the 5 series that would produce 350 or so hp. That would bring things more in line with the 'norm'. Plus, BMW has a history of bumping the HP for the 540 in the last few years.

Right ON Wolverine. As I understand it they want to close the gab between the current 545 and the 500HP M5. I think we should expect about 40 to 50hp more taking her up to 380 or 390hp. I hope its out as a 2007 or 2008 car.

Sorry to say but Your math sucks!

Old
M3/540 ok 15%
M3 have 16% less than M5
540 have 26% less than M5

new
M3/545 ok 23%
M3/M5 ok 20%
545 have 35% less than M5

Small mistake and don't change much that reality that top model compared to M5 is little behind and gap is getting bigger.
