Very funny difference between US and Europe.
In the US almost all cars are automatics, people who like driving take manuals.
Here in Europe, lots of cars are manuals but cars like 5 series are almost not sold with manual gearbox. Actually i understand this cause a five series, certainly a 550 is not a car for a manual transmission. Thats why i think u should take a steptronic. If u want a car with manual take a sportscar like an M3 of Z4 M. Exceptance is the M5 which is a sportscar aswell.

I am not sure if I agree that the 550 is not a car for manual transmission. I love my 6 speed on the 550i. But it is personal taste. I do agree that if I had bought a mid-size sedan of any other make, I would have opted for auto, but the 550 with AS responds quite well. Also I love driving manual.

In the 550 its a no cost option which is one more reason to have the transmission of the future
Correct... it is a no-cost option, yet according to Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds.com... the SMG adds $1000 to the resale value.
So... that means the SMG is like putting $1000 in your pocket the day you buy it.

its all about timing, lifting throttle, feathering the throttle, smooth as a butter
just takes time,
you don't have control over the clutch and gearshif (lever that is... the menchanical feel at least) and you'll be able to "feel" the timing,
like so
out of corner or from standing start (with smooth shifting)
lightly ease into 1st up to about 4000 (or where ever you like to shift) press the shift, but right before, remember to bleed the throttle so smg doesn't have to slip the clutch or jerk...onto 2nd
into a corner (fast)
coming in at 60 (in 3rd) at 4000 (or whatever rpm's)
bleed throttle, downshift, feather throttle (within milliseconds...lol this is gonna tkae timng and practice) to match gearbox output wit engine output, do it again, (whole process) according to the corner
out of corner, just combine everythign above,
it is try that smg in the 550 shifts slower, but it is all timing,
just put it in (s6? i don't knoww the name, but its the fastet gear changes ~ 90ms) "x mode" floor it, when about to shift gears (of course youll be doing a speed run), jsut ever-so slightly (im talking about 1/12th of an inch (about 8mm) to ease throttle input and jsut slam the paddes, itsjust so charismatic and exhilerating, wow, i mean, just floor it keeping your foot down while changing gears and you'll be shifting gears faster than ANY (except the m series/ferraris/ ect) car on the road....youll be shifting faster than any human can shift basically.....
its like having... superhuman powers

It was a no brainer for me. I ordered a 6speed for my 550. My buddy went through two M3s, one manual and one smg, and I had driven both numerous times. I found that with the SMG, I end up just leaving it in auto ALL the time. Definately nice when in traffic, but with the manual, I was always in the sportscar state of mind. I was always "driving" the car and I really liked that. Having to shift with a clutch always meant I was pressing and depressing the throttle and feeling the motor instead of holding a steady throttle like I would drive my X5
