My Ride: 2008 550 twin turbo
Default 550

Driving on hyw car just turned off. Made it to shoulder. Wouldn’t start. Had it towed to a shop. Checked out and there was no starter working. Had starter replaced but still no start. Any suggestions. Also put brand new battery. Checked the moter and it turns over with socket And ratchet and it does turn.

Did you try disconnecting the IBS?

The starter or battery was not the reason why the car cut off while driving. I'd advise you take the car to a BMW mechanic or any mechanic that knows what they are doing and read the codes.

The same happened to me, power loss while driving, and failed to start back up with a jump.

On mine, it was because the alternator died. And the battery ran down to 7 volts.

The alternator died because the alternator bracket gasket and head gasket were leaking oil into it.

The alternator dying also killed my battery (from driving it down to 7 volts) and I had to get a new one.

I also had to replace the IBS cable shortly after due to random failure to starts.

This happened to me on a cold day in winter after a long drive the prior day.

Ended up doing the alternator and gaskets at the same time.
about $5k at an Indy mechanic all in,(rebuilt alternator, voltage regulator, alt gasket, head gaskets, AGM battery & programming to car, IBS cable, oil change). Only about $1500 of it was parts.

Car has ran great since.

Might want to inspect if you alternator is covered in oil.

My car also had random starting issue, it turned out it was the IVM module (Integrated Supply Module).
It's a common problem with the e60, IVM is a junction box for many electrical wires.
Overtime solder gets corroded which can cause many problems.
