These matters are purely academic, at least in this thread.
If this is such an important matter go and get your cars to the strip.
Racing is racing but this discussion seems to be a baby slap one...

OK, starting over, and doing a more complete job, I think the following is appropriate.
BMW's prediction for 545i--5.7/5.8
BMW's prediction for 550i--5.4/5.5
Actual car mag avg--5.4
Prediction for 550i Step--5.5 - .4 = 5.1
Prediction for 550i SMG/Manual = 5.4 - .4 = 5.0
Of course what's above assumes that the Step-biased average of 5.4 is the correct average to subtract for both types of 550i. It may not be as, based on admittedly scan evidence, the Steps seem to be faster than the SMG/Manuals. So, it might be more appropriate to subtract, say, .2 for the SMG/Manual 550i to get:
Prediction for 550i SMG/Manual = 5.4 - .2 = 5.2.

So the 550 will only be .2 faster than the 545? No argument from me, becasue im no expert in this, but it seems that the 550 with 35hp more should do a little better.

Even though no Steps and only 1 manual appear(s) in the car mag tests, I think the most appropriate predictions for now are:
Prediction for 550i Step--5.5 - .4 = 5.1
Prediction for 550i SMG/Manual = 5.4 - .4 = 5.0
Given a car mag avg of 5.4, then my prediction is that the 550i will .3 to .4 faster than the car mag avg. 35 HP might reasonable be though to produce .3 to .35 better acceleration, at least through the 1/4, which is consistent, more or less, with what I say above. And, some report that the 550i picked up an extra 100 lbs. somewhere along the way, although that is not what the on-line BMW 550i brochure says. Note that if we use BMW's predictions posted earlier, then we get 5.1 or 5.2 for the 550i.

So 550i only has 40hp more then 545i and some of you predicting 4.9 to 5.0 for 0-60, and M5 has 500hp and 0-60 in 4.5sec??

BMW M5 CD 1/06 4.20 12.50 118.00
BMW M5 MT 3/06 4.80 12.90 114.90.
The average here is 4.5.
But, still, see the test results reported on this thread. The driver, practice, and persistence make a great deal of difference. With persistence and practice, the right driver will get these, or better, results out of a 550i. My predictions above assume the sorts of time spent and driving abilities available through the magazines.

We live vicariously through you Rr.
But, I do get out and race myself using my g-meter for timing. Still, aren't academic discussions OK here?
Regardless, I do wish that some with 550i's would join us on the meter-testing thread.

I feel that your discussion needs a conclusion.
There must be a way that some mag or something brings brightness into your despute.
When I get into Need For Speed, I drive a bike!
0 - 100 km/h in 2-3 secs is no problem.

M5 is 200lbs heavier, but it does have 140hp more, would love to drive one and see the difference. ![Wub](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/wub.gif)
