yes. But let's face it, the diesel can't be better than the petrol unless it's faster. And it isn't. So it's not.

I think the Steps are faster than SMG's--straight-line wise--whether comparing 545i's or 545i' and 535d's.. Check these two threads out.

no probs. And i can vouch that even a 350bhp 535d has no , and i mean no chance
against an m3 smg... unless hes wheels were useless, and he couldnt do a proper launch control

Thanks a lot!
But has someone a comparison between 535d and 545i, some data (0-60 mph, 0-100 kmh, 0-200 kmh, ecc) .. ?

People with 535d breathe black smoke that come out from their exhausts and tell us, petrol men, these nonsense words .

Tnx again!

What everyone is forgetting is faster WHERE - track / road / drag / rolling start / in gear ???????

The thing that I find interesting is that a 3.0litre straight 6 deisel is even remotely comparable to a 4.5litre V8

Personally, I think in almost all situations the 545i will be faster, but the plucky deisel will make an impressive show of it's self.

Totally agree.
No offence againt the 535d, its one hell of a car and very fast in daily traffic but its not made for racing like the M3. I think it says more than enough that still at the end of its live the M3 is still used as the standard for other comparable cars to compete with.

not only.... during a start if the m3 is in s6 with sport and dsc switched off it would murder a chipped 535d.

i really think that people underestimate the m3, and forget that it is an ///m car and it this respect it cannot really be compared
to an e60 be it chipped or not

Also go on autotrader.co.uk and bmw.co.uk ... strangely enough they both have 545i to sell ??

anyways this was a 545i vs 535d thing so... 545i is quicker than a 535d , chipped or not (unless its at 380bhp)

Yes it's been discussed. The top gear show when they compared the diesel with the petrol (545i vs 535d). From stand start i agree the petrol is faster. Not by much but faster indeed. From roll ons it still might be faster but not by much or they would be almost even. At higher speeds 200+ from my experience i can tell the petrol would still be faster. But from 60-100, 120, or 120 to 160 or so on (km/h) i would reckon the diesel to have the advantage of it's bigger torque numbers and peak torque values that are obtained at low rpms. That means the diesel won't have to or won't need to downshift as many gears to get it moving as the petrol. I can easily stay in 5th gear or even 6th gear at 1500rpm and pull away like hell without using kick down. That's hilarious fast. Because that's after all real life performance.
On a track i reckon the 545i to be SLIGHTLY faster because of it's reavy engine and ligther setup. But just slightly...search for the dbate on 545i vs 535d at top gear and you'll see what was that all about. I made a comment about the finish line on the show where they made a mistake when they showed the petrol passing it and then after 2-3 seconds the diesel.
Also if i recall that thread had a comment about the 535d vs M3 on top gear. Both cars went 1.31,8 seconds. But that's another stoy because the cars were driven by different pilots.
Keeping in mind that the diesel is more economical, has a rev band of well... idle rpm and 5000rpm and it has the torque of a monster...i think the 535d is the best car, the best to drive being also practical and luxurious enough, at this performance/economic category. And if you add the fact that it's so easily to tune it due to the fact that it's obviusly turboed (as most of the diesels are) then there would be simply no other alternative if you want to have a car that won't burn your wallet every time. 540i and sorry even 545i seems as a no no alternative for me. If i would have lived in the states that would be maybe different though.550i is at another level imo, as is the m5. Simply higher steps.
