guys

dealer mentioned today that all 4.4l BMW models are subject to a recall announced today. It relates to the DME device which has been reported as malfunctioning and affecting driving controls on a limited number of vehicles.

BMW are recommending a replacement unit - could be serious so I'd advise giving your dealer a call

what is the DME device, I've received the letter about the fuel line clip? What does the DME control?

DME is the engine management chip or "brain" that controls many of the electronic devices. This is a separate issue from the fuel line clip. It may not affect all cars but my dealer recommended I bring mine in to have it checked.

Just in "the source"... DME's with a date range of: 5/12/2004 and 6/21/2004 are suspect.

You can ping your dealer - give him your VIN/Chassis number and they can determine if your car has this issue. There is no recall (in the US) yet... it's only advance info. This may or may not change once BMW Group determines if the issue is anything at all.

My car has been at the dealer since Monday and they have advised me that they should keep it until I have a new DME installed - maybe not until next week.

Are they over reacting - It's driving me crazy, just had the car 2 weeks now spent a week driving a purple/yellow int 330ci then a grey 530i - I WANT MY CAR

Cool

I feel your pain jonboy, a week without your new car must be hard. What caught my attention though is your loaner! Purple w/ yellow interior!!! Maybe the hardest part is not being without your 530, but the stares you must get driving around in that 330. I hope that it's at least a deep purple and nothing too bright.

UGGGH! I called my CA and he told me my car is at the VPC but needs to have the DME replaced. My car was finished 6/30/04 so I suspect anyone expecting delivery within the next two weeks will be delayed at least one week. From what I understand the cars can just stall out without warning. I guess I'll slog thru a few more weeks with the mitsu (which coincedentally is doing the same thing!)
