Do yourself a favor and remove the oil pressure gauge and install a "T" fitting there. Replace the oil pressure switch on one port and install a 1/8" ball valve on the other. Install a pressure gauge to verify actual pressure when the warning light is on. While the God's may not be favoring you, you don't have to sit around and wait . . . .What if the light is correct? . ..You won't be the fist person with a BMW V8 with bad oil pressure/bad main bearings . . . .

Car now being investigated by local BMW independent. Pressure test at idle shows 1 bar (14lbs per square inch) which is correct according to Bentley manual) going to try a known good OEM pressure switch from BMW.

I hope that test included a road test that included monitoring the oil pressure when you come to a stop. Keep us posted . . . .

Nothing found yet. Investigation concentrated on electrics at present. Keep saying it could be oil pump, but according to pressure test there is oil pressure. If it is oil pump probably more to fix than car is worth. Thinking possible contamination in DME?

Engine gone bang. Terminal 😢not economical to repair. Shame as it is otherwise a very nice car
Think it’s cam chain guide gone and plastic debris and part of chain ended up in oil pump

Sorry for the loss. If you don't have the time to tear it down, I hope you let someone else do it so you can verify what the issue was. If you are going to own another BMW, it's possible this might be and issue again and it would be great to be in the position to prevent another loss . . .
