Hello all.

I own a 2004 545i with just over 62K on the clock. CEL came on ready increased emmissions via the idrive system. Made my way over to the local Auto Zone and had the codes read for me. Two codes presented themselves: 0116 coolant temp sensor and failure to reach opperational coolant temp (didnt catch the code number on the 2nd code, auto zone guy was in some kinda hurry).

Now, basic instinct would tell me to just replace the water temp sensor and be done with it, however I'd like to know if there is something I'm missing. Could there be another problem? Should I replace the thermostat as well? Ect, Ect.... Any input would be great.

And also, is this a DIY fix or is the sensor hard to get to?

Nothing fellas? Heading for parts by days end and might just replace both t-stat and temp sensor. Just want to make I'm not missing anything else.

 

I'd do a little diagnosing myself before replacing things. How many miles on the car? I'd also buy a cheap code reader.

That is kind of early for a thermostat to fail but the car is old.

Research 'hidden menu' and temp reading and monitor how long it takes to get the car warm also note the readings.

Replacing the parts is not hard if you are handy and have the right tools. I just did mine a couple months ago.
