I think it's because some models had Italian made starters (forgot name), like mine, but a lot were using Bosch.

Take it from someone that had a 545 and now owns a 2008 550. Although the changes are minor to the car but it makes a big difference in the overall picture and longevity of the car.

The interior changes/tweaks are minor but enough to be a major factor in the ease of day to day use of the car. On my 545 I had stuff peeling, popping and cracking not on this one all is solid with the interior and much more solid.

My opinion of coarse, but wanted to share.

Thanks. I'm just make sure I got a good car. I like BMW, and only BMW, but never had 5-series even I have always wanted. The problem was with the money, because by the time BMW is replaced a model(LCI), 3 series were more economically sound in the terms year production.

Are you sure about that? Aftermarket companies are selling upgrade kits for 550s having this issue.

I owned both a 545 and a 550. Both are great engines. As others have said, the change had nothing to do with reliability and everything to do with staying competitive. I will say that for me the 545 made more of its 325 horses than the 550 did with its 360, the 550i really didn't feel any faster than its older brother.
