The variances in gas mileage are very easy to explain. I can get 12mpg or 23mpg.

It is thirsty V8, so if you are idling around in low gears in city traffic you might get 12mpg. I drive 3 miles up hill through residential streets and 7 stops or turns. Thats 12mpg. A weekend on the freeways will get me 19mpg. A long drive on the interstate in 6th gear has got me 400 miles on a tank and 22mpg.

A few weeks ago my 545 recorded over 36 mpg running between 75 and 80 mph for about 60 miles...

Of course, it was between Truckee and Auburn CA. on Interstate 80.

For a hint at how I accomplished this 'feat', check out a topo map for Northern California.

Just made a 365 mile run from 8,000 ft to sea level this weekend. According to the ob computer - average speed 73.8, average mpg 32.1. Mostly sixth gear cruise at 80+, no stop & go - just go.

That's pretty low. On long drives on the interstate in 6th I get 27-30 mpg.

[quote name='grease' date='Jun 4 2005, 08:50 AM'][quote name='grogan545' date='Jun 4 2005, 07:48 AM']sorry if my first 2 posts contain little info,just familiarizing myself with posting.
have been into the secret menu thru the odometer reset button and managed to
fine tune code 20 which controls gas mileage calculations.factory setting is 1000,
I reset code to 1041.gas mileage figures are now very accurate.on recent trip
about 70% highway 30 % rural 2 lane mileage was 27.33 mpg.usually between
19 & 22 mpg in local driving

How do you access? Could you post in detail what you actually changed?

Hate to ask a stupid question, but what's the reset button?
hold in reset button approx 30 seconds until information comes up,scroll thru
menu by pressing reset button to code 19(lock on)wait until new info is displayed
scroll again to code 21 wait until info comes up,go to code 20 push reset once this will start right hand digit scrolling hit reset when digit you want to select is displayed,2nd digit will now start scrolling, continue until all digits are set,you must then hold reset button until new code is displayed

Let's talk apples to apples....are you guys quoting actual mileage or the car's calculated mileage which we know is optimistic.

I'm talking actual mileage.I made correction in menu but I always calculate
mileage after fillup.car read 27.1 mpg,actual was 27.33(310 miles,11.34 gallons).
equal amount of uphill & downhill from sea level to approx 1300' and back down to
sea level.I am one of those freaks who checks gas mileage after every fillup and
compare actual vs indicated.

Thank you very much for sharing this procedure. I am also one of those nuts that keeps a spreadsheet on every drop that is consumed. I also check every tank actual against the OBC mileage, accumulated as well as by individual tanks. For the first 14 months, currently running OBC 22.19 vs ACTUAL 21.21 or 1.046 which is where I am going to try and set the newly learned code 20. 'Course, even so, I will be over and under depending on my type of driving. Tanks fluctuate from 15 to 25 mpg, depending on the style.
