Everything you see here, minus the clutch fork (unless damaged).

To the above post, he means clutch "chatter".
Nice. thank you

its kinda like brake pulsation when the rotors get warped, since the cause is similar. when you let out the clutch to move from a standstill, it will jitter because of form errors in the mating surfaces between the disc/pressure plate/flywheel.

if the flywheel surface is not very flat, it will first contact the disc at high spots on the face. the number and amplitude of the high spots is commensurate with the resonance modes of the machine it was resurfaced on or chucking errors. i think the rotary surface grinder is better since the modes usually occur at a much higher frequency and you have less chance of getting the "once around" form errors, like you would on a lathe with a chucking error. if the disc does not get machined to its true spin axis you will get a once around runout and the whole driveline will jitter at a frequency 1/2 of the engine rpm.

hope this helps.

I had to get a new clutch in my 545i at 72k miles. I got a new bmw clutch kit and thermostat kit installed for 800 total including parts at labor. MIne was slipping through all the gears especially 1st and 2nd.

I think that parts were about 400 bucks. But if your going to try and do it yourself its a crazy job to do. You need to take off all 176 fasteners under the car, exhaust, its a pain. It was not an easy project, my mechanic had some choice words for me when I picked her up 2 days later...

You got the entire job of parts and labor done at 800? Thats really cheap. I dont think I'll be able to find anyone around here who knows what they're doing to execute at that price.

Bmw clutch alone cost like $520.00. So if you went with oem prts only...$800 is a steal. Thats exactly why your mechanic was kingking himself in the ass...lol

128k is impressive for the clutch life. Do you drive most on highway? If not, how do you drive to have long clutch life? Did you remove CDV? Please share your experience.

I'm mainly highway miles. I drive a lot for work so its almost all highway. I would say 30% is city driving. I didn't remove CDV or anything. I didnt even know about that until putting this post up.

I was trying to sell my car and then someone came over and ask to test drive it, so I gave them a ride instead first not knowing their ability to drive manual. Thats when I noticed this issue.

What do you guys think a 545 with that many miles is worth?
