For the first 30 miles the new R6 Titanium engine felt really flat after my 530D and I was truly shocked/disappointed.
After closer examination/testing ( during which the fuel consumption average hit 18 mpg ... yuk) I found that it does actually pull ok between 5000 and 6200 but it's not what I'd call accessible performance. I guess the car goes better with a manual box.

I must NOT agree with you. I was driving powerfull diesels in sporty configuraton all my life. Yes, it is the great torque that makes it feel like super power.
Now I'm driving 530i. In the beggining I felt like it has no power, it does not accelerate, BUT - it was just that the diesel like torque was missing - BUT after driving 530i for a while I realized it is strong engine too. You do not feel the power inside the car but look around you, look while you pass someone and mostly look at the SPEEDOMETER. The speed increases so fast. Put 530D and 530i next to each other for a race and they will go probably the same.

So what are you saing is just your personal feeling from inside the car, which does not proove much.

Man look at the numbers for 530 i vs 530D. Almost the same, 530i a little better on acceleration. Also BMW 3l is the best R6 3l gas engine in the world according to professionals.

The other benefit of the 535D over the 530D is bigger better brakes, which can't be spec'd so not sure how much they would cost. Good to have with the extra ponies on board.
