I would say don't do it. I don't know why people are saying that you will gain on handling... are they blind You have on your 535d PSS9 and stronger sways so with the right setup the M5 will have at least the same handling if not worst than your 535d. You already have the M5 rear with the M-Package, so about the look is almost the same car. The only difference will be the engine, SMGIII and LSD. I think that you are that guy that prefer to make turns faster, than to do straight line accelerations, and for that your CSL is alot better than the M5. I know that because i have a E46 M3 with some mods (PSS9, UUC sways, CSL wheels, full supersprint, carbon intake, schrick cams, custom remap...), that it isn't a CSL but it can give me an idea. And will you put the car on P500 every time that you get in the car??? I caught a M5 on P400 mode on the autobahn, and my E61 535d was as faster as the M5 without the need to downshift like the M5 when we caught slower cars... About top speed, my 535d made once 290kph on gps and 280kph is obtained easily (most tuners don't take off the 2nd speed limiter at 275kph).

IMO, the 535d is a better cruising car than the M5. For fun you already have the CSL.
Sorry to burst you're bubble, but i feel the need to correct you on a couple of points. Firstly the need to downshift, the M5 can donwshift quicker than any Steptronic box, so when you floor the loud peddle to make progress, your Steptronic will automatically downshift & that will be slower than the SMG in the M5 you refer to. Also, having come from a DMS 535d M-Sport to my current M5, the 535d even modified would not catch the M5 even in P400, unless the M5 wanted you to catch them.

As for handling, the one thing even a modified 535d won't have no matter what springs you fit is MMMMMMM. The M Set-up is designed my M & therefore should be the optimum set-up. I'm not saying their is not better out their but fit for purpose, the M Chassis, combined with the M Suspension, SMGIII, 5.0 V10 (F1 developed) the many extra toys (do you want me to continue???) is the better all round car & that from someone who thinks the 535d is awesome & sometimes misses it.

What Stephen has/had is an amazing example of a 535d (i've seen it) & to enhance it for his purpose he modified the brakes & springs, mapping & a few other nice bits & bobs, however the base for any car is the chassis, next the engine, next the gearbox then you move onto springs, tyres & all the extras etc & i'm sorry but M tops the tree out of the box.

Agree the CSL is quicker than an M5 around a track, but it's slower in a straight line & in my experience it''s only the CSL variant of the M3 that's quicker, as even being of intermediate track ability, i've never struggled to reel in & overtake any M3 i've encountered.

Please also note that the new 335i is quicker to 62 than both the M3 & the CSL & mapped one has been clocked at constant 0-62 in 4.1secs which is quicker than my car, so their will always be something quicker & sharper on the market.

Stpehen, you'll love your car & make sure you report back soon with your opinions. In the real world it won't be hugely quicker than your modified 535d, but coming form someone who went from a DMS 535d to an M5, it's like night & day & i'm sure you'll agree & love your new purchase.

Don't quite follow you here...
Couldn't agree more - Full Leather is lovely but just not worth it, IMHO - in fact, it's about the only option my car doesn't have - took a bit of nudging before the factory agreed to make a car with Extended Perforated Merino Leather, but with Alpina, anything is ultimately possible!!!

Enjoy the M5, Steve! You didn't consider the B5, then?
I've never understood it but i'll try again to explain.

Extended Leather is standard on an M5 & is the same as Extended Leather on any other E60, which means leather seats but a plastic dashboard & door cards etc. Full Leather is an option on the M5 (albeit ?5K of an option) that adds the same colour leather (as the seats) to the dashboard, top half of the doors & glovebox as well as a few other areas, as well as the headlining in Alcantara.

Now my confusion is you'd think Extended would perhaps be more leather covering than Full leather, as it indicates something being extended, but in fact Extended is LESS than Full.

IIRC in the US, perforated can only come as an additional option to the standard Extended Leather, it's not available with Full leather on the M5.

I've driven the B5 around the ring, and it is a lovely car. But even Alpina will admit the M5 is more of a driver's car

Have to give you that - if you're going to hit the Ring, take an M5 over a B5 any day, even with the new LSD.

Erm, I think it's a reference to markets where (at least originally) there were models without even Extended Leather - so it goes Basic, Extended, Full. Sort of makes sense.

On the M5s, especially in the US, perforated Merino leather was only available with Full Leather, not with Extended Leather, at least in 2005/6 - not sure how it is these days...

I stand corrected on the US Perforated. Thought i read on M5Board that it was only available with Extended, but i double checked & as usual i was wrong
