Nice theoretical discussion, but:
Russ, just go out and try it! You should be able to find an empty road or parking lot where you can give it a try, and why not make a video of it?
This reminds me of the DAF, the tiny dutch car of the 70s. These cars had CVT transmissions, where the transmission worked exactly the same in forward and reverse. It meant that the top speed were the same forward and backward, and I've heard that some people held backward races in these cars! Not even that dangerous, because the top speed was pretty low (I guess 120km/h / ~75mph or so).
Before my time though, I have not seen many DAF passenger cars. DAF is now well known for its innovative trucks, but they do not make passenger cars anymore.

I know someone who had one - it didn't go any where when one of the drive belts snapped!

I can only just reverse park and get out of my driveway. My reverse driving skills are rubbish. And there is nowhere near me I could go backwards at 60mph+ safely... ! We don't have "US Sized" car parks here ...

It is very dangerous though. The car is no longer stable and with the slightest steering error you will flip over! Remember that those cars did not have air bags etc.
Anyone try it with an Audi variomatic, or multitronic as they call it?

Done it myself, with my Volvo 340 Variomatic. I selected a quiet road, put it in reverse and did around 100 km/h backwards.

It starts very slow, spinning a lot (a front wheel drive has the engine, the E60 is empty in the boot) .

What I need is redwhiteblue to race a 550 in reverse and then post the results here, in a borrowed 535d.

What's scary is that I know who Mater is...
My children have watched that film so many times!

My Ride: MY2004 530d. Poverty spec
I used to own a Westfield (Lotus 7 style lightweight) with 2 bike engines in it. This had a transfer box separate to the gearboxes with a reverse gear selectable. So it actually had 6 forward and 6 reverse gears (keeping the sequential boxes on the bike engines). So in theory I could have gone backwards in 6th gear at 138mph at 12000rpm (gearing limited).
.
Never tried it though
Oh, and it did 0-100mph in 6.8s (forwards). Was rather quick
