I was driving in the car today (where else would I be driving I hear you say). My son was in the car with me and he asked "what's the top speed of this car in reverse and how fast can it accelerate going backwards". I said "I don't know - but I know a sad bunch of geeks who probably do!". So ... do you ... ???

If you tell me how fast it can go in first, I can tell you what it will do in reverse.
First gear is 4.17:1 and reverse is 3.4:1.
Thus the maximum speed in reverse will be 1.23 x what it will do in first. I guess about 60mph.
Working out 0-60 is a bit more difficult but I would guess at around 0.5sec slower than going forwards.

Thus second gear will give you a max speed of 1.78 times that in first.

Mine is an auto - I can't red line it in 1st and find out what the top speed is unfortunately !!
Or drive it at half max revs and double the speed.
All these figures only apply to the 535d (auto only) anyway.

Independant to the gearing, acceleration would be slower in reverse. There would be less weight on the drive wheels (less traction) which would get worse with the weight shift to the rear (or to the front under this scenario) under actual accelration.

Nice theoretical discussion, but:
Russ, just go out and try it! You should be able to find an empty road or parking lot where you can give it a try, and why not make a video of it?
This reminds me of the DAF, the tiny dutch car of the 70s. These cars had CVT transmissions, where the transmission worked exactly the same in forward and reverse. It meant that the top speed were the same forward and backward, and I've heard that some people held backward races in these cars! Not even that dangerous, because the top speed was pretty low (I guess 120km/h / ~75mph or so).
Before my time though, I have not seen many DAF passenger cars. DAF is now well known for its innovative trucks, but they do not make passenger cars anymore.
