535d auto box problem - urgent
#1
the car was driving perfect. i noticed the last time i switched the car on it said 'gearbox problem - gears may be able to be engaged without pressing brake' or something along them lines. but it went away after a few seconds
anyway after doing approx 30 miles of enthusiastic driving, i parked at the side of the house. i came out about an hour later and when i select D or R nothing happens. the car won't move. doesn't even attempt.
the stick moves properly and lights up correctly but the gear indicator on the dash binicle stays in P
the car won't move and i can't push it out of the way because it still thinks its in Park and has the rear wheels locked.
i've checked fuses.......disconnected the battery for an hour............checked the gearbox oil level via the red dipstick....
help please as i need to get the car moved at least.....

Try lifting the leather gator up and see if the stick is properly engaging with the gear box.
I think theres a tab that you can move with a screwdriver to manually change the gear into D or R and push it

hey. unfortunately its not under warrenty.
an ex bmw technician took a quick look at it this morning and said he thought it could be a broken shift linkage. some part of it is made from plastic and he thinks it could be it
we pulled it onto a tilt and slide lorry and he took it with him
i called with him on my way home from work and he hadn't a chance to get a look at it yet, but thinks if its the part he said, he can make it out of metal and have it back on the road this evening
fingers crossed......

Welcome to the forum Christopher,
What a first post! Here's hoping your ex BMW tech knows his stuff.
How old is your car? How many miles? There are a few of us who would like to know the outcome so we have "the knowledge".
Good luck,
