I'm not you and I have friends on this forum that want to hear about things like this and might have something to add prior to the race.
Look at the number of posts this thread has received, you may be in the minority. Your probably correct about the guy I was going to race, and most of us are obsessed in this forum, that's what its about. Thats also why I can't ask him again.
This post received many replies and they provided quite some information. The race result will have some weights on my decision on getting a 535i with software upgrade or a 550i. But when will we see the result or will we ? I am just curious about the result, not want to see a competition between two drivers. It is a competition between machines. So drive safely.

You're looking at only one side of the equation, the 535 isn't at all unique in this respect. BMW consistently understates its peformance figures across the board, as do many other companies. Porsche and Mercedes do the same thing.

As a case in point, over time Znod and Grogan545 were able to massively undershoot the official specs for the 545, both recording under 5 seconds for the 0-60 run (in fact they undershot all magazine test time too). As I have owned both the 545 and 550, I know the 550 is (as you would expect) a little quicker than the 545 and thus likely to be able to at least match the times that owners on here have recorded for the 4.4 L engine.
My statement was more sinister; some feel they further understated the 535 to not cannibalize more 550 sales. I was set for the 550 and they lost me to the 535. there are others here as well.

So what you are saying is ... BMW are "sinisterly manipulating the figures", because they would absolutely not want to have people buying the alternative car from their major competitor, BMW. (?) They are both BMW E60's !! I expect the profit margins are almost identical ... car costs more to build, price is higher, they probably couldn't care less whether you buy a 535 or 550 as long as you buy one !!

At this point they probably make more money on the 550 because the engine, which is the major difference between the two, has been amortized over the X5, 550, 750 for three years and because the price is a net $6000-7000 more on the 550. Twin turbo is a newer technology and thus more costly now and has been amortized for only a year and over only the 335 and 535.
I'm just reading your signature and location and I now understand that drag racing is perplexing you. Your in UK where gas prices are much higher than the US and the culture is different. Remember the 1950's, 60's, 70's in the US where we had the horsepower wars. Well in the US those wars are back and this is important to us as a culture. So therein lies my interest and your benevolence to 0-60 times.

I don't get all the "publicity" of this event. It's been thread after thread about when the race is going to happen, then it never does. If it were me, I would have said NOTHING, then one day posted a thread titled "Just had a 550 vs 535 race, results inside".
I have to agree with this. This thread is quite disappointing.

As "disappointing" as this thread may be to some, I am very interested in knowing how much the Dinan software will change your ride. I'm certain that your first ride will make you insanely giddy, but please keep us posted with your experience and give some details...would love to get you paired up with someone who chose PROcede or Juicebaox vs Dinan...

We will still do the races as more local people, to me, are now willing to participate. I'm sure there's another stock 535 around here and I'll run with the Dinan software. Car goes in tomorrow, should have it back Friday.
