Is this a really stupid suggestion ... or can somebody not just look up the BMW published 0-60 times for a 550 and a 535?

Racing two cars on the street is pointless if you are looking for some hard scientific evidence about which car is faster, which sounds like what you are trying to do.

Put a good driver in a 535 vs a bad driver in a 550, and the 535 will win. Swap drivers and the 550 will win.

I don't get all the "publicity" of this event. It's been thread after thread about when the race is going to happen, then it never does. If it were me, I would have said NOTHING, then one day posted a thread titled "Just had a 550 vs 535 race, results inside". Public willy waving doesn't fit in with the E60 brand. I expect this "friend" of yours doesn't want to race you because he's embarrased about how obsessed you are with it all, and probably dreads it every time you bring it up again!

The reason they can't use BMW or other published times is that the 535 is not stock. It has been re-programmed with more aggressive engine control software that increases the turbo boost among other things.

man if i had a 550 i would race you everyday, anyday.... it would just be interesting to see the difference in races with a stock 335 and a modified one... id offer to race but i settled down for a 2008 528i lol.... I'm not complaining, i love my car... the 5 series is beautiful but it wouldnt hurt to have twin turbos under the hood

For what it's worth, stock 0-60 times per the Feb issue of "Bimmer" magazine are as follows:
- 535i - 5.5 manual, 5.7 Step
- 535xi - 5.6 Step and
- 550i - 5.4 manual, 5.5 Step.

IMO, this proposed "race" is meaningless as the two drivers may have different skills.

regurgitated from the BMW brochure, some feel BMW understated the 535 capabilities not to cannibalize 550 sales. The 335 coupe was posted by Road & Track at 4.8 secs and its only 200 lbs less than the 535i.

I'm not you and I have friends on this forum that want to hear about things like this and might have something to add prior to the race.
Look at the number of posts this thread has received, you may be in the minority. Your probably correct about the guy I was going to race, and most of us are obsessed in this forum, that's what its about. Thats also why I can't ask him again.

You're looking at only one side of the equation, the 535 isn't at all unique in this respect. BMW consistently understates its peformance figures across the board, as do many other companies. Porsche and Mercedes do the same thing.

As a case in point, over time Znod and Grogan545 were able to massively undershoot the official specs for the 545, both recording under 5 seconds for the 0-60 run (in fact they undershot all magazine test time too). As I have owned both the 545 and 550, I know the 550 is (as you would expect) a little quicker than the 545 and thus likely to be able to at least match the times that owners on here have recorded for the 4.4 L engine.
