I can assure you it's not the fuel in this case as I have always run Shell Premium. After blowing the first HPFP I have never pumped anything less. As for the MAF, my car is not "surging", but rather "dropping out". Please re-read my 1st post's decription of the sensation and let me know if this decribes the sensation you had too. if it does, then I will certainly ask my dealer to check the MAF. Thanks for your help!

Ok, when the car "skips", is the engine revving at the same time as skipping, or do the revs just stop and pick up and carry on again. I.e. The car just stutters in acceleration? If the car is accelerating and doing a stop start kind of pattern in the acceleration, then it is the same as, or at least damn similar, to what I had happen in my M5, and the problem was one of the MAF sensors.
Question - had your car thrown a code? How did your dealer run down the culprit?

No leaks, and no prior issues with tranny.

No it didn't throw up a code. I went to my local BMW M Specialist, and they simply plugged it into the diagnostics computer, did a live diagnostic whilst driving and accelerating, and as there are 2 MAF's on the M5's, one was a lot slowly at "recognising" the air feed than the other. Pretty simple in my case...

Another thought I've had... Wheel Speed Sensor maybe??
