545? are you getting a used or are you getting the last of the 05's? Cuz theres not many left... they're 550s now.
WOW does your dad want to adopt a son?![Tongue](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/tongue.gif)
As for differences... theres no difference now exterior wise... there use to be the Chrome Grill for the V8s and the I6s got black grill...
Ok well the V8s now still have larger brakes and larger diameter exhaust pipe other than that you cant tell the difference except for the wheels.
On a side note... I've "heard" people say that the 530 "handles" better for at least feels like it handles better because its lighter up front w/out that Huge V8 loading down the front.
530 is a GREAT car now. especially with the new engine. If I had to chose between the 530 and 545 now I might just might reconsider and get the 530 with the new R6 engine. But if its between the 530 and the 550 I'll still go with the 550.

Wow, you're very lucky to get a 5 series at 16 years old. Have you considered a 3 series.
If you want to save money, get the 530i. One thing is you're getting an expensive luxury item at an early age which will make it hard for you to downgrade to lets say a Toyota Camry.
I'm 31 and pay $1600 per year for coverage for 530i.
Check out the link below for pictures.

hey im 16 and new to e60's. im possibly getting a 5 series, but not sure which to get (530i or 545i)
i want to save money, so 530i would be best for a "cheaper" price.
but in other cases, can you guys help me out which would be better?
and could someone tell me the prices on insurance for both?

yadamean,
The 545/550 is a lot less fuel efficient so you can save money on gas by getting a 530.
The 530 has a slightly louder exhaust than the 545/550 because its muffler is much smaller.
If you're 16, insurance will be crazy. You'll save money on insurance by listing one of your parents as the primary policyholder, and you as a secondary driver.
Have you thought about a 3 Series? If I were 16, I'd want a M3 or 330i/325i over an E60.

You do not say where u r located. Big variability in rates based on location (National and city versus urban, etc). Your stable sounds urban like to me.
We can help better when we have proximate location.
All E60 bodies are the same except for real subtle differences already mentioned (grills, tail pipes tips, etc). After some after market (either 3rd party or BMW such as aero kit) mods you can tailor your look to your style, if desired and your poor parents allow.

I'm 29, married, had no accidents in the last 7 years, no tickets (on record, haha) and have 3 cars insured with the same carrier (Farmers) - I pay about $550 a year for my 530. $1600 is sure looks high...
Anyway, I think you will be paying around $100-150 a month for a full coverage (depending on deductible) if you are 16 y/old.
I test drove both 545 and 530 before I made my decision - I suggest you do the same. Even though 545 has a lot more power and better acceleration, I still prefered 530 because of hte way it handles. Fuel economy is also noticeable with 530, and its cheaper to begin with. But in the end ot all depends on the packages and options of each car.

The 545 is certainly more fun, in my opinion, provided that you have the extra $10,000.00 to pay for the V8 engine.
A lot of folks either won't or can't pay 10 grand for an engine, and I don't blame them.

If you look at base models, its more like $8K difference, I believe.
Right but the V8 base wether 545 or 550 has more included than the 530 base. So unless you dont count the extra options you get on the V8 as anything then I guess you can say theres 8K difference... But if you get the Premium package on the 530 (which is standard on the V8s) then theres not a 8K difference.
