I have NEVER relied on Consumer Reports for a true evaluation of ANY product. I prefer to trust evaluations that come from the same industry as the product...auto magazines, programs, mechanics, clubs, forums...and make my own evaluation from the plethora of opinions...just my opinion.
Bottom line: luv my car, haven't had any major issues.

My Ride: 525i, Orient Blue, bought used with 22000 miles. Grey lether, sport package, BMW Assist, Cold Weather package. Xenons. NOT premium for some reason, I do like the metal finish vs. the wood, but do miss the garage opener.

I think they are correct in that there have been more quality problems with the new BMW model that with other new models. That really should not be the case. However, those quality problems are not things like "engine replacement" or "transmission replacement". The ones that I have personally experienced have been:
1. Cupholder needs replacement
2. Tires were recalled (replaced for free)
3. passenger headrest does not work
4. Cigarette lighter (aux power) is loose and needs replacement
These are all "minor" but there is no reason why BMW can't make a car without these flaws and get a higher rating. On the other hand, my Mom has had the tranny in for service and ultimately replaced on her Honda mini-van 3 times within 80k.
Would I rather drive a Honda mini-van even if it didn't need new trannys? Not quite.
I get a huge amount of satisfaction from owning and driving this vehicle. I wouldn't get the same satisfaction from owning a different car just because the cup holder worked.
I don't know about you guys but when I bought my car, I drove a lot of others, Acura, Lexus, MB, Infiniti, etc. And nothing could touch the BMW for what I can only term "coolness" (and ride). It looks cool on the outside and on the inside. It's just a cool car. Where is that on the Consumer Reports rating?

[/quote]Well...My buddy still drives his 03 e39 with all the squeaks and rattles. It's been to two different dealers multiple times in the west LA area. And lets just say he's learned to not only drown out his girlfriend when he drives.

The April 2005 issue of Consumer Reports really slammed the 2005 530i for reliability, giving it the lowest possible grade ("well below average"). Athough CR was impressed with the ride, handling and performance, they found the interior fit and finish to be less impressive than in the previous generation.
They also listed the 2004 530i in the Used Cars To Avoid list.
Very disappointing results, considering that the 2003 CR Buying Guide indicated that the 530i was the highest-scoring car that they had tested.
Was just about to pull the trigger on a new 2006 530i, but CR's report is definitely cause for concern. Am interested in your thoughts and experiences.

I previously drove a 2001 530i. The E60 handles, rides and steers better than the E39. I would take the Consumer Reports review with a grain of salt.
