My Ride: 04' 530i w/sport package
So, when I initially started this post, I was getting what I thought was pretty low fuel mileage. I changed my plugs, I also put in a bottle of Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner and instantly got a bump in fuel efficiency up to about 21.5 MPG. Since then it's gone back down to 18-19MPG. Approx 3 tank fulls ago, I went back to strictly Shell Fuel to ensure I was getting quality gas. I'm still only getting 18-19MPG. Thinking about another bottle of Lucas so see what happens... What do ya'll think?

I put 17k on my 530xi this year (prior to it being totalled), and I was averaging 25.8 to 26 MPG according to the OBC. 40/60 city/extra-urban / hwy miles. I replaced it (post accident) with a 550i, and now I get 19.2MPG. darn go pedal.

530i with an N52. I get 23 MPG with mixed driving and around 29-31 with highway driving.
Aside from what you have already completed:
-Change your air filter
-Clean your VANOS solenoids
-Techron
-Correct tire pressure
Aside from mechanical issues, your driving style is the number 1 variable when determining MPG. I'm also assuming you reset your MPG when comparing/contrasting statistics.
