I've noticed the coil symbol, but nothing more. Doesn't seem to affect things, or delay the engine firing up.

I have noticed that the diesel engine takes longer to warm up than petrol. A colleague in Finland explained that diesel cars there put out so little waste heat, that there's not enough to warm the inside of the car. So they have to install secondary heaters. Interesting!

I've also heard about "winter diesel". But perhaps that's an old product. Only seems to be the one diesel, which we use all year round.

BMW has put electrical heater to cars which will be sold in cold climate areas. Every second or third row in radiator is actually electrical heater coil to speed up engine heating. These modern direct injection turbo engines produce so little waste heat that this kind of system is needed. My car has also Webasto, which is small diesel burner to heat coolant in engine. Of course with timer and remote controll. No scraping of windows in a winter.

In all Scandinavian countrys (at least) have summer and winter diesels, because paraffin in diesel start to freeze in about -20C and block filter etc. Winter diesel has no parafin inside or it has kerosene diluted.

Some times it has been nasty surprise when people fill up they car in Helsinki (south) and drive up to Lapland where is maybe -30C. If recirculation back to the tank is enough to keep it warm no problems, but in a morning car will not start anymore.
