I used to have this problem. I didn't take it in specifically for it. It seems to have gone away. Software?

Acribb, you are quite correct that the delay should not be there in a gas/petrol car. However in a turbo diesel there is often some lag as the trubo spins up. It's just that I feel it is more pronounced than what it should be.
What I am trying to determine is how much of what I am experiencing is what the other petrol E60 owners are experiencing and how much is turbo lag or some other problem.
The bi-turbo 535D has two turbos one for low revs and one for high revs to supposedly overcome lag.

I have logged a call with BMW head office here and we will see what they come up with.

The lag has not been around to see me this past month. In the past, since I got the car, it was observed at least once a week in critical situations and not so badly several more times a week. Does it take that long for the car to learn what you want?
I admit to switching to DS or M when a critical maneuver is about to come. This is in response to the fear of the 'problem lag'.

I do get some throttle lag from time to time, however I can only say I notice it when stationary and I want to pull away from junctions for instance, and not all the time either.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the car pulls away in 2nd gear when in standard D mode??

Anyway, I have adapted pretty well to the characteristic.
