This is what I love so much about cars! It doesn't matter what we bought, we want it faster. And selling a 525 for a 550 won't matter! Soon we start looking how to make it faster too.

The guys that have an M5 want more out of their car as well.

The car I had before my 535 I would have been happy to tune it to 300HP. Now I'm starting there and looking for 400

Remember the "Turbo" button that used to be on the front of some the old computers? Just put one of those on the dashboard before you sell it. The placibo will add about 25HP guranteed. If you charge them $300 to keep it with the car they will swear they can feel the difference.

You need to add one of those dials that go up to 11.

There's a third option and that's a higher differential gear ratio. If your car's got a manual transmission you can generally just swap to a used differential from an automatic ($300 for diff. + $300 install). If it's an automatic then you can have your's rebuilt (~$1200). Either way it's the best performance increase for the cost to improve acceleration...and probably an especially good choice for San Francisco. Lot's of advantages: no engine modifications, minimal/no change in fuel economy, no change in emissions, no maintenance issues, no insurance issues, increases torque across the full rpm range in every gear, no car swap transaction costs ($5,000 + price differential). It's not done much with the current series' of 3ers and 5ers just because of the more exciting engine options available now, but it's still very popular with all the M cars and earlier 3 and 5 series...because it works great and BMW differentials are set up from the factory for much higher speed driving than we have here, which hurts acceleration performance and doesn't really benefit us at all.

The amount of improvement in wheel torque is proportional to the change in gear ratio, e.g 3.46 => 3.91 increases acceleration by 3.91/3.46 or 1.13 which is +13% or equivalent to adding 26 ft-lb on a 200 ft-lb engine.
