How are you measuring the consumption? It's the autobox that does the 'damage' - also the short runs won't help!

im just using the obc ,is that not the best way to measure it are they not very accurate,i had a 2001 728i sport before my 5 series and for the same run that averaged 21-24 mpg
My manual will go as low as 26mpg on short runs in town, 75mph on the cruise control will return 44mpg, 80-90mph motorway journeys approx 38mpg, the last 700 miles have averaged 36.2mpg with 350 miles of motorway.

Diesel's seem to suffer more with auto 'boxes than petrols... (Unless you're going up and down motorways all the time!)
Also, bear in mind that the 525d has a higher fuel consumption than the 530d!!! (Until the updated 525d arrives March '07 - but it will actually be a 3litre!)

It depends on what sort of driving you do, but it doesn't sound like your MPG is too far out. When the engine's cold and it's stop start driving town driving, my 530d auto manages truly horrific economy. The torque converter seems a lot "slippier" than that in a petrol.
I've compared the economy of my OBC read out with a manual calculation and it's usually accurate to +-1MPG.
Long runs where it gets to stretch its legs and warm up properly is where the big auto diesel gets to shine IMHO. For everything else, there's petrol.
