525D running very heavy on fuel, 20mpg..

Start with the obvious. Check the Air filter.

Other options, check the brakes, is there any binding?

I assume you are using D not DS, (if auto) 'cause that will make a big difference.

Adjust your driving style, gentle with the gas, look ahead and try to allow the car to slow down rather than using the brakes etc.

Other than that, I can't think of anything obvious. Might need some professional advice from a good indy.

The air filler has been changed n i drive it easy n in D. I dnt knw what u mean about the brakes binding... Can u explain abit more? Cheers

Jack up the car and check the wheels spin freely, if you have a faulty wheel calliper it can cause the brakes to put too much pressure on the discs, this means the brakes are on slightly all the time which will eat fuel.

Also, when was the last MOT? What did the emissions readouts show?

long shot, but go to menu number 4 on the secret obd menu and check how much fuel per hour is being consumed at standstill and at 60mph. We can compare and perhaps something will come up..

Also, what is your idling speed? I think that comes up under menu 4 as well (as U/min)

I Jacked up the car and checked if the wheels spin freely and they do... I haven't got around to check the hidden menu yet but will do tom....

I checked in the hiden menu today under 4.2 and this what it stated -
D-VERB1 LIT
40.0 1
UNDER 4.3
D-VERB1 WEG
238.0km
Under 4.4
D-VERB2 LIT
39.9 1
