No wanting to go off thread, but my 545 averages out at 27.9 - mixed driving motorway and town centres.
It makes me feel nice inside that my petrol lump can (almost) get the same mpg as the bigger diesels!

Ah the famous 'how long is a piece of string' question.

It varies enormously, 25mpg around town to 37 on a run is the sort of range depending on your driving style.

My 530D Auto averages around 32mpg on mixed driving, from as low as 22 in town to 40mpg on a run.
I'm concerned as I get 32-33mpg no matter how i drive in my 2006 525D M-Sport Auto.
Yes the analogue econometer thing swings wildly every time the throttle position varies but even driving 200 miles mostly on motorway with the cruise control returns at best 35mpg.
I thought this was normal as i know 2 colleagues who have an 04 530D Auto and an 06 535D Auto any they get pretty much the same.
My wifes old petrol Audi A4 got 40+!

I rang the dealer and they told me not to pay any attention to the published figures (i know this anyway of course) but I really expected a car supposedly capable of mid 40's to be able to do 38.

Am I expecting too much too? Could there be something wrong?

First, check your tyre pressures and do a proper brim-to-brim test over a few tank fulls. The official figures are done in a lab with perfect conditions, including all items such as radio, lights and aircon off.

Another thing to note was that some of the older software didn't like shifting into 6th at motorway speeds. First, check the correct rev range using the manual option and ensure it shifts into 6th correctly. This will impact economy if it's not working.

I could easily get 50mpg in my 530d on a reasonable run sticking around the motorway speed limit. It was town driving that sucked the juice! Also, bear in mind the 'original' 2.5l 525d's were actually worse than the 530d officially. The newer 3.0l 525d's have addressed this imbalance...
