525d intermittent power problem

I have a manual 2005 525d which seems to have a very intermittent problem with power delivery.
Sometimes, I accelerate hard and it seems to built up the revs, but then suddenly stops, the revs die down and the speed reduces. It's acting as though I've just let go of the accelerator, but it's still fully pressed.
No engine management light etc. comes on and 95% of the time the problem isn't there.
Anyone any ideas of what could be the problem here?
