Excuse me......you cant compare a BMW to a honda or toyota.....its like comparing apples to oranges. And you cannot judge a car based on its horsepower alone. You can get a KIA that has 230 HP but it doesnt mean that KIA is better than a basic 3 or 5 series BMW. One more thing if you are on the freeway it doesnt matter if u have a v8 or v6 , we are all required to obey the speed limit.....and dont forget the horrible traffic specially here in Los Angeles! If you are into racing ,yeah you would need that kind of power but for everyday transportation a 525 will do after all its still a B M W ! The ultimate driving machine!
You're excused... numbers are numbers. Stock HP numbers from manufactures are compareable. Now does a camry or accord drive better than a E60? Does it feel better than an E60? Does it look better than a E60? Does it have remotely as many features as a E60? Does it have the prestige of a E60? Do I want any of those over a even a 520i not to mention a 523 or 525? Do I want to be seen in one over a E60? Absolutely NOT.
BUT when those un-informed people out there ask so how much HP does it have? you say 215. and they go. OH my Accord has more HP than that... BMWs Mercedes Audis for the price you pay should be at the 250 260hp mark. YES I know BMW inline 6 engines produce power better over all than those icky V6s.
Imagine trying to pass a accord on the freeway and you cant. Ya alright you can let him go ahead and thats that not a big deal. Of course not. But just not me... last time a V6 accord was driving slow in the fast lane and when I got the chance I got around him and he obviously didnt like it. No I didnt cut him off or anything I'm not that kind of a driver, whatever you want to think. But ya so he decided he wanted to go around me. I knew he floored his car I saw him catch up pretty quick on my right side I staied in 6th and stepped on it about 80% throttle but he was still gaining up to my rear door now so I downshifted to 5th not even 4th or 3rd and gave it 90% throttle and all of a sudden he looked like he stopped and went in reverse.

My Ride: In the process of buying the right 2006 530i
I want to chime in on this thread. I have test driven a 525i, and I thought it was every bit as fast as my buddy's 05 530i, in fact, to me it felt more agile. I thought it had plenty of power, incredible at banking turns, an handled like a BMW. In all honesty, the fastest and most agile BMW I have test driven (test driven 325i, 330i, 525i, 530i) has been the 330i, it was also the most fun to drive. I love BMW's!
So again, in my opinion, the 2006 525i is not underpowered. It has plenty of power! I am not sure of any other differences, I know xeons are not standard, and the 525i comes with 17" wheels. I have a hard time telling the 530i and 525i apart when they are parked next to each other. I am not sure if the 17" wheels carry an advantage or disadvantage, someone else may be able to answer. As far as the status thing, in my opinion, a BMW is a BMW, I respect and love them all.

My Ride: 2012 535i M Sport Package
I guess I should voice my opinion since I am miss525i
Great car! I wouldn't mind having more power...but for what it is, it sure has plenty power for driving in the US
Amigo, that's all we have to say about it, right?

Remember the line from Al Pacino in "The Devil's Advocate", "Vanity; my favorite sin". I bet sales people love that sin.

It keeps me out of trouble. It is a great car no matter which way you drive it. I like smooth!
Now, back to the 525i. I believe it has a tremendous amount of power. The 2006 525i can move, in my opinion. I would have no trouble having fun in that car, too much fun actually. In my opinion, the true test of a car is not absolute speed, but enough speed to get the job done, and being able to handle the speed, such as banking turns, making a tight unturn, gripping the road; the true driving dynamics. I believe the 525i passes on all accounts.
I also believe it is the best value in the BMW lineup.

Plenty of power tbh. Although there have been one or two times where ive wished it had just a bit more grunt. I nearly had my ass handed to me by a heavily modified peugeot 106 with 4 punks in it.
It had a dual exhaust setup and mustve had thousands of quids worth of junk fitted. Problem was that upto about 70 mph it didnt dissapear in my mirror quite as quickly as idve hoped for. Although when i dropped back due to roundabouts and then passed him again i was doing 120 whilst he was maxed out at 90 something
