BMW has launched official news about the new 123d with a L4 2.0 litre twin-turbo diesel engine.

It has 204 hp and the co2 emissions are only 138 g/km.

123d will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7,1 seconds (0-60 m in 7,0).

BMW tells that the same engine will come to other BMW models as well, soon.

So maybe a 523d will be reality

Nope

Well it won't be unless there's some more shifting around.

204PS is 150kW.

From 09/07 there will be:

520d 130kW
525d 145kW
530d 170kW
535d 210kW

If you were going to "name" a 150kW diesel to fit consistently and unambiguously in the range, would YOU call it a 523d?

But not the 523d. Not in the e60.

And there's only just over two years until the F10 so maybe places in that range.

Do we really want an engine that accelerates a 1-series from 60 to 62 mph in 1.1 seconds?

Maybe not...

Also the E90 series has the new 3.0 litre L6 145 kW diesel.

But still I doubt that BMW has developed the new 2.0 litre 150 kW diesel engine only for the 1-series,
even if the new 1-series coup? and cabriolet will soon be on the market.

Wondering the same thing myself re the E60 but not sure how they would fit in in to the range without overlap.

The only solution would be to discontinue the new 525d engine. But it came with the LCI and it would seem strange to let go of that engine so soon. And there's no use releasing a 523d during the last year of production for the E60/61.

By the way, there will be a 520i again this fall. Anybody that knows if it's a 4 cylinder and how many hp?

The solution is to call it 320sd & 520sd. Just like they have/had 320si.
