I've been studying the specifications of the 523 and the 525. It seems they both have the same engine. But clearly something has been done to the engine to create the marked difference in horsepower and torgue between the two models? Does anyone know the technical details about what's been done to the engine? Also, would it be possible to tune a 523 up to 525 performance?

I was told by a BMW engineer that the difference is more than just software so you can't just buy a 523i and turn it into a 525i by a software update . What I understood from him is that the 523i has a 1-stage air intake manifold, while the 525i has 3-stage air intake manifold. He also told me that the number of sensor on the intake header of the 525 is much higher than that on the 523i's.

I wanted to know more details, but that is all what he told me. He said that he did not go into details because it would be too complicated from me. I told him that I have a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering , so suddenly he turned out to be very busy with other customers and completely ignored me .

Look at the gear ratio, they too are the same. In time to come there will be some tuner that can turn the 523 with 525 power. Cheers.
