I don't think the differences between the 545 and the 550 (other than the additional power) will be as pronounced as the changes made when going from M54 to the N52 engine. The N52 is a new engine with valvetronic, magnesium bits and all the other paraphernalia required to help keep it ahead of the opposition.?
PS
Lucky you considering a 550i.

I thought the 550 was just a capacity increase of 400cc from 4.4 to 4.8 litres. No doubt someone on the forum will explain in explicit detail that I am totally wrong and should be banished from the planet for even suggesting such a thing.
Oh, certainly, send me on your 545 please.

It's been really hard to nail down the genisis of the new 4.8L engine. Some printed articles have indicated it is the X5 4.8L with some changes. Others say new without defining what that means (new to the line-up - 7 series - or truly newly developed engine). And it could well be my 4.4L with appropriate bore/stroke changes. I did use an magazine (at work now so I do not have it in front of me) to ckeck two different articles on 750 and X5. CCs were identical, bore and stroke identical - could not find any differences. Does that make it the same, I am still not sure.
