I have an e61 with the 2.0 diesel engine. I noticed it gives off a noisy rattle diesel sound above 3,500 revs, which get a bit better when warm. However, under load or hard accelerating I can really hear what sounds like the valve rockers. I had 2.0 disel before in a 3 series and it never made this noise. Anyone h ave similar issues. experiences?
Oil level is fine, was changed 8k miles ago.

my 3ltr is quite at low revs but gets noisy when pushed hard, might be an idea to get a health check done on it just to be sure

If anything the 2.0 D gets smoother with higher evs... noiser, sure, but smoother from a vibration perspective....

Sounds like a fueling or injector issue to me, what age and mileage? My 520d sounds smooth (for a 4 cylinder diesel)!! no matter what rpm.

It's an 2008 model (58 plate) done about 27k. I am going on a 400 mile round trip soon so am hoping that will give it good clear out. My main concern is the turbo. The previous owner did a 100 mail round trip dialy commute on motorway, so probably parked it on the drive without letting it run for a couple of min to let the oil cool the turbo bearnings

I will put some decent diesel in, in the meantime, V Power or the like.

Same engine as my car, should be smooth at any RPM. I always run mine on Shell V Power Diesel so see how it goes on your trip

Did my 400 mile trip yesterday First thing to say is I got 50.4 MPG at a steady 85mph which is blumin amazing !!!

Engine seem to be quieter once warm, but takes 20 mins to warm up. Still a little noisy under acceleration, gets quieter under harder acceleration - strangly.
Put in some V Power and that also appears to make thing quieter.

Will definately get this checked at next service (8k away) as the car still has 2 years warrantly. Might also pay for an intermediate oil/ filter change now to be sure / safe.

2 major things concern me, (1) swirl flaps, (don't know if there's any warning signs of these going) (2) tubo, so will keep on eye on things.

Problem is I am comparing to a 55plate 320d touring with the 163bhp engine. This was a very quiet engine, probably because the accoustic insulation engineering has improved since they designed the 5. But the 5 just seems very noisy at higher accelerating revs by comparison, maybe it's just me getting used to the new car. It's so quiet once rolling, cruising, that any acceleration noise seems out of place. A but of paranoia always helps too !!

Thanks for the guidance, support.
