I get my 520d in 7 days! cant wait.

I hope its fast enough too. - but I think i'm going to take the dms route and remap the engine to 208 bhp & 405Nm.

This options avaliable to you if you want more speed. I reckon it'll make it a fair bit quicker than the 525d.

Not too mention, if you ever feel like there isn't enough power in the 520d, you can install a Propane kit on it. It's like NOS for diesels! Plus you get even better gas mileage!
I'd like more info on that propane kit. It's the first time i hear about this. Is it really like a nos kit but for diesels? Any links?

520d can be power inough for someone. But I take 530d for myself and I really agree, that You should take for testride those all enginetypes. And have Your family with You to take that testride.

Because 520d feels powerless with full load and trailer... It feel OK when I try it only by myself, but full load...

For everyday use the 520d is enough.

But the best choise for a diesel E60 is the 530d!
I would agree with this Ricracing - I tested a 525d and was dissapointed as it did not feel much quicker than my current 130hp TDI A4.

My new 530 arrives next month - not many extras though due to the extra cost of the engine

The German carmagazine Auto Motor und Sport (a quality one) did pic the 530d as the best
buy of all E60's, so it is not only my meaning.

But I have testdriven a 530dA and I must say I was impressed.

If I drove more than I do (< 15.000 km/year or 9300 miles) I would go for the 530dA
or as the Austrians do to 80% a 530xdA!

I just read an article that BMW is now the best selling 4x4 Premium brand!

hello everyone,

im very close to putting in an order for a 520d SE with a whole bunch of specs (visibility pack, comfort seats, dakota leather, extended lights, hi-fi speakers etc)

been looking at this goldmine of forums for the last week and just have a quick question. Was wondering if the engine is powerful enough for the car? I do a 60/40 mix of freeway vs city driving. My preference for this model is the fantastic fuel consumption, and with the chance fuel prices not looking to go down anytime soon it seems to be the best option.

520d
Max output (kW/hp/rpm) 120/163/4000

525d
Max output (kW/hp/rpm) 130/177/4000

Does the extra oompff really make that much difference?

thanks in advance!
If you've already ordered - just ignore this

My last car was a 320 diesel coupe (150hp engine).

It was a reasonably fast car, nice to drive and fun as you could push it hard on the roads.

I now have the 218hp 530d.

I think I would personally have found the 520 slightly underpowered and my advice would be to use some of the money you propose to spend on options to fund the 525d - I think the extra power and (more importantly) torque will matter on a big car like the e60.

This is a very personal view though and as advised by others in this thread you really have to try for yourself.

My 525d went in for a software update and i got a 520d as a loaner.

First impressions was it was quite underpowered. At low speeds it did nothave much power, and if you floor it at slow speeds it takes ages to react. Also where the 525d/530d can easily rev to 4500rpm, the 520d was struggling to get to 4k.

Thats my 2 cents...

I tried various 520, 25 and 30 ds back to back.

The 530 is the fastest, by far, manual or auto. It was the best.

The 525d feels quick in isolation as an auto, but in reality the engine can't really cope. It changes gear twice as often as the 530d, uses more fuel and is slower.

The 520d doesn't have the guts to pull an auto box either, but as a manual it is not noticably slower than the 525d, it is also far more economical, if a little rougher.

If you want auto, go for the 530d. If you want a manual and will have the opportunity to exploit the extra power of the 530d then it is an excellent car. If, like me, company BIK car tax is an issue then the 520d is a no-brainer. The 525d is a little bit in no-man's-land. It has higher emissions than the 520d and in the case of the auto the 530d! But is little faster than the 2.0 Litre and a whole lot slower than the 3.0!

I also tried both the SE and M-Sport. I found the SE rather noisy and uncomfortable next to the M-Sport, with heavier steering! The Touring rear suspension was rather rough and gave a jiggly ride that I found unacceptable, this was an SE.

I ordered a 520d M-Sport, my budget could have got a 535dA M-Sport, but I was too reluctant to pay the tax as I rarely get to use a car in "anger". I pick mine up tomorrow A.M!

The 525d does not use more fuel than the 530d. The 525d is more economical.
