As already said, pre LCI cars are not as economical, have had both. My manual LCI E61 averages about 42mpg mixed driving (not OBC but worked out between fill up's although OBC is pretty good). What does make a difference is a long run of 80 miles or more, I get 45mpg minimum on a long run and if I take it steady 48mpg is no problem.

Lately I have been getting 5.7 litres per 100km, 49.6 mpg (imperial), 41.3 mpg (US). I have 520dA LCI and most of the driving is quite ordinary highway with varying traffic. My driving style can be considered boring; pretty nice to enjoy the early morning, some music and big mug of coffee on the highway.

I get about 32 mpg (UK) on a 2006 pre-LCI auto. This after a remap and pretty much always driving in London (OBC shows average speed of 20 mph). Before the remap I think the average was 30 mpg.

So you have a reference, I drive an 2007 LCI AUTO transmission 520d.
As mentioned previously, with one passenger, manufacture-recommended PSI and no junk in the boot: I get approx 32 UK mpg in mostly urban cycle [very short 7 mile commute, mostly 30mph zones] rising to approx 38 UK mpg when combined with motorway driving at weekend.

Knowledgeable BMW sources suggest that my average consumptions figures are about right given the 520d is on a higher rev at motorway speeds (compared to bigger engines) + diesels are not known to be frugal in urban cycles.

In my case, fuel efficiency may also be marginally lower because of my short drive where the engine does not full heat up, though efficiency has improved with recent software upgrade + switching to Shell V-Power Diesel (though several other visitors here have seen no appreciable difference).

32k km,on average for full tank obc shows 5.5 ltrs/100km for mixed drive of motorway and town.On a recent 280km round trip all motorway at a max speed of 120km but mostly at 100km obc showed 4.9 ltrs/100km.I'm very pleased with this performance for a car of this size.
