Hello

I have had my 520d for a few weeks now - come from a 330ci so its a different drive but its a good car all the same - its a 2006

I am getting an average of 40mpg with all sorts of driving, not particularly heavy footed but quick enough and i used to average 27mpg in my 330 so I was expecting a bit more from this really.

Is that what people get generally or should I be looking into something - if so what

Thanks

Greg

My 520d has done a little over 16,000 miles in 2.5 years.
Bulk of that is low-speed urban driving - often in 30 mph zones.

I have got 30 UK mpg equaling about 27 mpg (US) - not sure where you are based so clarifying units.
This is with one passenger, no significant laden weights (no pushchairs, carseats and junk in the boot) and tires filled to manufacturer PSI specs.

When driving on long motorway journeys; brim to brim, I usually get 38 UK mpg equaling about 32 US mpg.

Speaking to a BMW technician, I am told this is about right for the 520d in real driving conditions.
I have a heavy right foot - and diesel engines are not particularly economical in low-speed urban cycles.
Best on long motorway journeys at 56 mph.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that is helpful, I'm in the UK, in the South East and my journey is A roads and the M25 so mileage sounds about right compared to your figures

I know what you mean you should be getting better MPG when you look at the BMW figures. I had a 120d with the same engine and could do no better than 43mpg and this was on long motorway type journeys. My 2006 E60 530d gives me @42mpg and is a lot more fun than the loss of 1mpg!

I'm averaging 6,9 l/100km, so that is around 41 mpg in the UK.
Mainly trips from 16 km, but ones a week a longer trip on the highway.

Mine is an E61, so it uses a bit more because of the additional weight.

I have a 520d, I average around 38mpg (according to OBC) driving to work mainly on 30mph roads but there is a section of road at 60mph.
I recently drove to France with the family and a car full of camping equipment, I averaged 48.5 mpg, that was mainly motorway miles sat with the cruise on at 80mph (French speed limit) I find I get more mpg if I use the cruise control (even at 30).
I'm very impressed with the mpg, much better than my previous Rover 75 1.8t and even has more bhp.

Also depends on whether it is an LCI model or not. Pre-LCI had poorer MPG than the equivalent LCI. In addition, if it is an auto then it will have worse MPG than the manual variant. However, the MPG difference between a manual pre-LCI and auto pre-LCI is very very large compared to the difference between manual LCI and auto LCI.

If you're going to compare then may as well compare apples to apples as much as possible.

Just so you can compare: Mine is pre-LCI with a manual gearbox.

My Ride: 520d LCI, old engine, manual, black dakota, platingrau II, standard (242?) rims.

measured brim to brim (yes, I'm like that):

Starting with a full tank at odo 0 km and over the course of 39657 km (also ending with a full tank),
I put in a total of 2601 liter of diesel in my LCI (with pre-LCI engine) manual E60.

This is 6.56 liter/100 km
or 43 MPG imperial
or 35.9 MPG US
