Anyone else have to add oil early on?

What's up with this?

What's the best oil to add?

You should stay with synthetic oil -- look in the owner's manual. I think BMW recommends Castrol.

Quick question -- Did the car tell you it was low or did you happen to check the level yourself?

Not there yet, but I need oil that quickly on my E39.

Castrol Synthetic - I think thats what BMW uses even if it is labeled BMW. At least the cover to the oil used to say Castrol.

There's been at least one other thread on this. Some are using oil, other are not. Mine's not.

I'd say, though, in general, it's best not to mix types/brands of synthetics, if you're topping off. Use BMW oil.

Jimbo, i have the same problem as yours. It happened when my car was 6500 miles. I brought to a dealer and he said it was software problem. He refused to do oil service for me. So i brought to another dealer and they said the same thing. But they add an quart of oil for me. I'm not really sure if it's the software problems. I've not update my software yet to 13.2 or whatsoever.

I had this same problem a couple of months ago... not sure about the mileage but I ended up adding a quart of Mobil One. Everthing has been excellent since...

Link to recent discussion on the M5 board on BMW, Motor Oil, etc.

This subject has been discussed many times over, in short:

1) I'd stick w/ the BMW High Performance Synthetic Motor Oil, yes it is made by Castrol, but it is NOT exactly the same thing as the Castrol Syntech sold at AutoZone (different formula).

2) Take it to your dealer because they should just fill it (top it off) for you for free as it is part of full maintenance program.

cheers,

beewang

I think the issue with needing oil is more pervasive in the 530s. All of the posts I've seen discussing this are 530s.

I have always thought it to be related to the style of break in driving -- varying speed being preferred over constant speed, irrespective of the number of cylinders.
