The new issue of Winding Road has a preview of BMW's proposed Progressive Activity Sedan (Minivan?). They say it is based on the next-generation 5-series running gear and that the PAS may be ready as early as 2009 - which means the F10 stuff must be well-along in development too.

And what also caught my eye was this ...

Assuming the engine offerings are similar to those of the 5-series, expect a range of six- and eight-cylinder engines giving at least 230 horsepower, with the potential for 420-plus horsepower if BMW decides to fit the V-8 from the 550i.

There was also a link to a previous PAS story (which I missed) that states ...

The newcomer is based on the future new BMW 5-series platform, thus saving production- and development costs. Scheduled for launch by the end of next year, the car is expected to get power from 3,0 litre six cylinder engines delivering 272 HP (fuel), 286 HP (Twinturbo-Diesel) and 231 HP (Turbodiesel). The top of the line version 550i might get the future direct-injection V-8 delivering 420 HP. For later also a four wheel drive variant could come on the market.

So maybe the next big engine for the 550i won't be a twin-turbo but a direct-injection. Either way, the F10 550i will get a very substantial power plant.

At what point does it become too much ?? In all honesty at 360 hp I have way more than I can use and wonder sometimes if a car with this much power being driven by young inexperienced drivers isn't just irresponsible................. But I'll be there buying one for sure

It's a shame that new engines are so expensive to buy (I mean the engine only, not the car)

Not if the FI one is based off your NA engine... chop off the turbos or if they fail you still have your base speed

I totally agree with you, I believe BMW should go back to their heritage and work on weight savings. Their cars are getting heavier and heavier.

I remember reading in Autoweek, a few years back, where a group of German auto engineers were polled on this very question, how much is enough. The consensus answer was around 800 (588 kw) horsepower. I have to say, in my experience, the only thing I ever driven that came close to too much power was a D11 CAT
