Does alignment need to be done at the dealer? Is there a reason why a tire shop couldn't do the alignment?

I was told in the past (never confirmed) that the Active Steering requires something that can only be done by dealer.

Thank you.

Dealer quoted me $265 to align my '05 545 with active steering. $100 was to reset the steering. Decided to go indy and paid less than $100 for all.

I have the same vehicle which needed an alignment. I took it to Firestone for about $80. After the alignment, I obviously noticed that the ride was much better. My nonprofessional opinion, I believe that an alignment at Firestone will do fine.

Just had my 545 aligned. Went to couple of local shops including STS but was told it cannot be done due to the active steering. Had it done at the dealership for $165 with a loaner car.
