Just checked out the latest issue of Car & Driver (SLK55 on the cover), they are saying the V8 in the 750i (albeit some intake mods) is the same exact engine from the 2004 X5 4.8is!

So no totally new V8 4.8 for the upcoming 550i huh?

 

what does C&D know about BMWs anway???

BMW?s new 4.8-liter V-8, which generates
360 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque"


they say its new in black and white so that I take it as being new...it was also described more indepth in the press release of the 750, but i cant find the story right now...

 

The 4.8iS and 4.6iS engines both ALPINA designed

 

BMW took the 4.8iS engine and made some modifications to it, including crankshaft, engine block, pistons, head ect ect

they then put it in the 750i

The X5 then got it in the 4.8iS from jnauary 2005 prooduction

So it is similar to the new 4.8iS engine (oil pan different) but a bit different from the pre 2005 4.8iS engine

 

Well at least it'll be the 3rd production year for the E60, 3rd production year for the 4.8 V8 from the X5 4.8is but 1st year this engine will be placed into the E60!
