I bet you that recently you have a lot of "Damn! The gas prices have gone up AGAIN!"

I've never heard anyone say: "you know, this thing has too much damn horsepower."

Seriously, it's not even a question. Get the 525i. You're talking about a 0.5-0.7 mpg difference in fuel economy, that's nothing. A 1% increase in CO2 tax, still nothing. And 1 second off your 0-60 time, which in my opinion is a major bonus. The cars are almost identical in weight (5 lb difference), but you can carry 20 lbs more with the 525, score if you like bigger girls. And then there's the power, 218hp vs 174hp, and 184 ft-lbs of torque vs 170 ft-lbs of torque. You seriously can't go wrong. Where else are you going to get 44 more horsepower and 14 ft-lbs of torque for $2000? No where. And it seriously doesn't impact much else on the car, go look up the numbers for yourself.

1600 GBP difference? go for it. Although I think the 523 is good enough but we are talking about 1600 difference compare to 3300 GBP here in HK. If the difference was that small here, I would've got the 525i.

I have to agree with all the statements above, I commented in your other post and deleted them as I didn't want to sound negative, but you do not want to have a base model with all the toys. Depreciation nightmare mate!

Doesn't matter how capable the 523i is, it will always be the base model, and second hand buyers are not normally worrying about emissions etc. so they will find a little more money and get the bigger engine.

You will always be thinking, what if......?? as well.

Thanks for your comment and those from everyone else.

I'm going to amend my order to the 525i. Seems the logical choice.

Didn't the UK have a 520i for a while? (2.2l?)

I think most cars are a depreciation nightmare! I'd love to upgrade to new 530d or 535d (or 535i, 540i, 550i ) but I'm going to hold... It's the longest I've owned a car and I'm still happy I'm thinking of about 4 years (almost at 2.5 years)

Bit of a side track on the actual question but my answer does get there in the end!

I test drove a 523i and a 520d and think if you were considering the 523i you are better off with the 520d as it felt like it had more grunt and is only 0.1 sec slower than the 523i to 60mph but the all important 50-75mph value is 7 secs opposed to the 9.4 secs of the 523i. If you stick autoboxes into the mix the 520d is over half a second quicker than the 523i. The best thing of all is that it does all this on less fuel

So I guess my thoughts on all this are forget the 523i and get the 525i if you can afford it, or if you are on a budget get the 520d and slap even more toys on it

525 if you can afford it, unless you don't need the extra hps and unless there's a cheap possibility that the 523 can be uptuned back to a 525 specs

as far as I know, there's no hard evidence to confirm it can't be done...
