+1 I just did this on my 2010 528i. I bought the oem USB stick for $38 from here:
65902338094 - OEM Bmw
There is a guy online that will generate the FSC code for your VIN and sell it to you for 50 euros. His email is sieras5@inbox.lt. It worked perfectly

I have a 2009 528xi with dvd-based navigation (no hard drive). Just to be clear, the updated dvds only feature more POIs, correct? No changes done to software? The reason why I am asking is the 'perspective' view is pretty useless on my car - no street names are displayed on the screen.

As I understand correctly, the car has CCC, all you need to do is buy the new dvd maps (2013) and swap out the old one. that's all. I saw ebay sells alot. For the one has CIC version, the maps need to load to the built in hard drive so the maps need to support CIC in order to update new maps and also need an activation code.

update:
Finally I got my navigation map 2013 updated, took approx. 45min to finish the update with USB. I don't know about the DVD maybe will take longer time. The map works great and the good thing is it now shows my HOME address no more borrow neighbor's address
thanks guys with all the helps and info.

Glad it worked. As a safety tip, never store your exact home address in the nav nor keep any paperwork with your address in the glovebox. If someone manages to jack your car, the last thing you want is for them to know where you live and it's especially important if you have a garage -- don't want them to drive up to your house and hit the Homelink button. Sounds far-fetched but definitely happens.

Saw a local story where thieves were stealing SUV's out of sporting events that had GPS and garage door openers.. hit "home" on the GPS, hit the button to open the garage, and have a real good idea how long they have to get all the valuables out of th house since you're tied up at a game..
Luckily, I have both LoJack and a GPS locator in my car, so if it ever gets stolen the best the thief can hope for is the cops find him before I do
That's SUV's, typically GM (Tahoes, Escalades, Suburbans) which are notoriously easy to steal. BMWs are MUCH more difficult to steal. Besides, if you're going to worry about the car getting stolen all the time you'd never go anywhere. Don't worry about it, the truth is if a thief really wants your car there's nothing you can do about it, they will eventually get it.
