I believe you have the CIC unit with the harddrive so no you will have to go to the dealer. If you had the CCC unit (dvd based nav) like i have you can just buy the disc from ebay or the dealer. I bought my 2013 disc from ebay for 30 bucks and it works great!

You can buy DVDs to update the CIC from eBay, just remember there are 2 types: For CCC the disc says on it NAV-CCC, this will not work on CIC cars. Get the right disc and you'll be fine.
Oh, and BTW, the new TomTom discs are 2 disc sets, so (since you live in TX) you will need to keep both in case you head to Louisiana or East.

Either using the DVDs or using a USB stick with the latest maps loaded

The easiest way is using a USB drive. Updating the maps is very simple and takes around 15-20 minutes. The USB drive loaded with the 2013 maps + the map license (FSC code) costs $250 w/ shipping from Tischer/BMW of Silver Spring (BMW Parts and Accessories at GetBMWparts.com). You can also just buy the USB drive w/ maps for around $50 and get the FSC code elsewhere at at a greatly reduced cost (won't say where -- just Google). And if you really want to go cheap, you can find the maps on some torrent sites and load them onto your own 32 GB USB stick.

There is a guy online that will generate the FSC code for your VIN and sell it to you for 50 euros. His email is sieras5@inbox.lt. It worked perfectly
